What is Book Club?
The Book Club experience is designed to bring students and the community together as we explore important topics within business, finance and professional growth. This is a time to read the chosen book, while gathering in-person to discuss pages read and any candid conversation that evolves.
Who can join Book Club?
Each student in the startUP program will be participating in Book Club. In addition, anyone in the community is welcome to join. This can be an opportunity for you to share your wisdom with students associated with the current book, or learn more about the topic yourself!
How are books chosen?
The first book we are reading in Fall 2021 is The Automatic Millionaire by David Bach. This book was recommended by a guest speaker last year. In Spring 2022, we will read Atomic Habits by James Clear. Next year the books may change or stay the same. It greatly depends on the needs of the students and how the world evolves.
What are other details I should know?
- A reading and discussion schedule will be sent to all registered readers shortly after the registration deadline of October 5, 2021.
- Discussion times will be held during startUP class hours which are Monday-Friday 7:20-9:00 a.m. These meetings will last 60-90 minutes.
- Meeting locations will vary between local businesses in Waterloo and Columbia and will be communicated in advance via email.
- A private Facebook group will also be available to stay engaged. Joining this is not required to be a part of Book Club.
- If you are not able to make all the discussion times, that is okay! We understand everyone's schedule varies and welcome you anytime you are
able to join. This includes arriving late or leaving early on scheduled days. Seeing business people in action is a good learning experience for
students. Sometimes this involves accommodating many different schedules.
- Fall Book Club will conclude in mid-December. The Spring book will begin in late January/early February.
- Books will need to be acquired on your own. We recommend purchasing them from this link or any bookseller of your choosing.
